Difference Between Layer 2 and 4 PCB

The basis of SMT processing is PCB, which is distinguished by the number of layers, such as 2-layer PCB and 4-layer PCB. Currently, up to 48 layers can be achieved. Technically, the number of layers has unlimited possibilities in the future. Some supercomputers have hundreds of layers. But the most common ones in medical electronics or automotive electronics are usually two or four layers. If you want to choose your board layers reasonably, understand the difference between 2 and 4 layers.

2 Layer Printed Circuit Board

Compared to 4-layer PCBS, 2-layer PCBS are easier to use due to their simple design. While not as simple as 1-layer PCBS, they are as simple as possible without sacrificing double-sided input functionality. The reduced complexity results in the same reduced price tag, but it means fewer possibilities compared to 4-layer PCBS. However, as the most commonly used circuit board in the industry, it has the significant advantage of no signal propagation delay.

4 Layer Printed Circuit Board

4-layer PCB has a larger surface area than a 2-layer PCB, increasing the possibility of more wiring. As such, they are well suited for more complex devices. Because of their complexity, they are more expensive to produce and slower to develop. They are also more likely to have propagation delays or interactions, so proper design is very important.

So What’s The Use of Layers?

The most important layer in a PCB is the copper foil signal layer, which is the name of the PCB. While a 2-layer PCB has two signal layers, a 4-layer PCB has four. These signal layers are used to connect other electronic components in the device. Between these layers are insulating layers, or cores, which are added between the signal layers to give them structure. In a 4-layer PCB, there is also a solder barrier layer, which is applied to the top of the signal layer. This prevents the copper trace from interfering with other metal components on the PCB. They also have a silkscreen layer for adding numbers to the different components to make them easier to lay out.
