Types of Gerber files

There are several common types of Gerber files, including

Top-level Gerber files

A top-level Gerber file is an example of a file format that helps in the production of printed circuit boards (PCBs). It consists of a graphical depiction of the top layer of a PCB design in the common Gerber format used for PCB manufacturing.

A top-level Gerber file typically describes the location, size, shape and orientation of all components, traces and other elements on the top layer of the PCB. This information is then used by the PCB manufacturer to generate photomasks in order to transfer the design to the top layer of the PCB during production.

In addition to the top layer Gerber file, there are usually other Gerber files for the bottom, inner and solder resist layers of the PCB. the PCB manufacturer combines these files to produce the finished PCB.

In short, the top layer Gerber file is critical to the PCB manufacturing process. It provides the manufacturer with the data to produce the top layer of the PCB according to the original design parameters.

Bottom Gerber file

The Gerber file containing the copper traces and feature details of the PCB bottom layer is the “bottom Gerber file”. Typically, PCBs are layered and each layer needs its own Gerber file.

The arrangement of the components is usually part of the underlying Gerber file. This file may also have details about the silkscreen layers and solder masks.

The manufacturer uses the Gerber file to create a photomask that transfers the circuit pattern to the photographic material on the PCB. Subsequently, with the help of the photomask, unwanted copper is removed to reveal the proper circuit layout.

Solder Mask Gerber files

A solder mask is a Gerber file format used in the design process of printed circuit boards (PCBs). It refers to the solder mask layer of a printed circuit board (PCB). This shield covers the copper wires to prevent the solder from coming into contact with them during assembly.

The Solder Resist Gerber file specifies the size, shape and position of the PCB area that must be covered by the solder resist layer. Based on this information, the manufacturer creates a template to apply the soldermask to the board.

The Solder Resist Gerber file uses PCB design software and is one of several files required for PCB manufacturing. Other files include drilling files, copper layers and PCB layouts.

Silkscreen Gerber files

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) use a file format called a silk-screen Gerber file. The Gerber file format is a common format used to record information found on the silk-screen layers of a PCB. It contains, for example, details about the positioning of components and other markings on the board.

Component outlines, part numbers, reference designations and other data are printed directly onto the PCB during the manufacturing process and in the silk-screened Gerber file. The Gerber file format is often useful for exporting files after they have been created using software tools for designing PCB layouts.

The silkscreen layer is essential to ensure the proper placement of components on the PCB and the performance of the board. In addition, most PCB manufacturers support the Gerber file format, which is widely helpful in the electronics field.

Drill files

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) use a type of file called a drill file, also known as an NC drill file. The drill file includes details about the routing and slotting of the PCB and the location and size of the holes to be drilled.

The drill file usually comes from PCB layout software and is exported in a format accepted by the PCB manufacturer. The file includes details about the size, position and number of holes required for each location.

The drill file is a key part of the PCB manufacturing process as it contains the details required to drill the necessary holes in the appropriate locations and sizes. In addition, the drill file is combined with other files, such as Gerber files, to obtain the full set of manufacturing data for the PCB.

Drill files are available in various forms, such as Sieb & Meyer and Excellon drill files. However, most PCB manufacturers support the Excellon format. It is therefore the most popular format for drilling files.
